Priapus, a minor fertility god in Greek mythology who has a permanently erect penis,  was a symbol of health and fertility.  Statues of him were placed in gardens, at doorways, and in crossroads throughout acient Greece and Rome.  This is thought to be the inspiration for the modern garden gnome.
